Dave Bemis - craft talk
At our meeting Aug. 16, Dave Bemis talked about his career as a newspaper editor and his personal history. Our newest club member, he is semi-retired after 35 years of editing newspapers in Santa Barbara County and western Oregon.
He grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania, moved to Oregon to attend graduate school and start his career, and first came to Santa Barbara in 1983.
He finished his newspaper career in 2013 as editor of Lee Central Coast Newspapers, which includes the Santa Ynez Valley News, Lompoc Record and Santa Maria Times, as well as two weeklies in San Luis Obispo County.
He now works part-time as the copy editor for the Santa Ynez Valley Star and has just finished editing a mystery novel by Santa Barbara author Elizabeth Upton.
Announcements
Club Service Chair John Reese announced that we will have a Santa Maria style Tri-Tip BBQ for District Governor Nick Frankle's official visit on September 22. The club will furnish the meat and members will bring salads, sides and desserts. Sign up sheets will be passed around closer to the event. Club board members should plan on coming early that afternoon for a special board meeting with the DG.
John also asked everyone to wipe the lip stick off their wine glass because the automatic dish washer does not do a very good job.
The fifth Thursday meeting in September will be at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. We will get tours of the viticulture department, perhaps even samples. Car pooling will be arranged for those that want it.
On Thursday this week, Jim Lohnas will lead a discussion of lessons learned at the recent J&O Festival. Please make a few notes about what you think can be improved for next year.
Program chair Denise Holmes has asked for help with the projector to make sure we can always accommodate the speaker's needs. At the last board meeting, the suggestion was made to form a tech committee with at least one member always at every meeting to set up the projector and help the speaker. If you would like to be on this committee, let Dean know.
Your editor is not happy with the way meeting tasks have been displayed in the bulletin using the ClubRunner widget. Every week I would have to delete the prior week's entries lest they appear again, then it would list everything addinng pages to the bulletin if you had the misfortune to print it out. The new system has just two weeks of assignments and can handle things like being dark or fifth Thursdays. If you need to know in advance when you are scheduled, call Club Service chair John Reese.
