September Recap
We ended the summer with a Fifth Thursday event at Brothers Spirits in Buellton. Unlike most distilleries, they do not produce alcohol. They buy bulk wine and distill it to produce vodka and several specialty beverages.
Our weekly programs included Danielle Sharaga speaking about genetic counseling for people likely to contract cancer, and an update on the SYV Humane Society by Seth Hutsom as well as two programs presented by our own members. Sarah Larkin spoke about World Peace on Peace Day and your editor spoke about the benefits of coconut oil. Most attendees will remember his joke rather than what he said about coconut oil.
Dean also showed everyone how to access the web app that keeps track of members jobs at the weekly meetings. Contact Dean if you want to see where you are in the schedule for snacks, invocations and greeters.
We also prepared and served dinner for the Buellton Senior Center. Many thanks to all who helped.
A new projector is a huge improvement over the old one. This one does not clip off the sides of photos and even has sound for presenters with videos to play.
Foundation Meeting
The club's 501(c)(3) foundation met at the end of the month. Kate presented a well researched array of international causes with recommendations to the board for funding. Ron made two community service requests, one to be shared with youth service. The board also approved funding for four Dunn School students to attend RYLA. Individual awards will be announced at the weekly club meetings as the funds are disbursed.
A total of $41,600 has been allocated to the avenues of service for distribution prior to 6/30/18. The breakdown is Community - $12,480; Youth - $8,320; Vocational - $6,240;
International - $14,560. That does not include $2000 for Allan Hancock scholarships or our district matching grant.
CLUB BOARD MEETING
The next board meeting is Tuesday, 10/10/17 at President Inge-Lise's home from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. All club members are invited to attend.
