Gene Johns
On August 3, Air Force Major Eugene Johns entertained us with stories of flying P-47 fighters in Europe toward the end of WWII. He brought a couple tour books with pictures of the men he flew with and reminisced about them, some funny and some sad. He was visibly moved by some of his memories. Gene is the last member of his squadron still alive so many of his comments were about those who passed long ago. He was assisted by his daughter, Glynnis Mullenary, a local Realtor, who helped him through the hard parts.
Continuing the military theme, last week we heard all about Vandenberg Air Force Base from Public Affairs NCOIC Staff Sergeant Shane Phipps. VAFB hosts many tenants: some military commands and some civilian aerospace companies that launch satellites from the base. Shane conducts scheduled public tours of the base once a month, and private tours when requested. There was some talk of organizing a tour for the club. Let Inge-Lise know if you are interested.
FIFTH THURSDAY
The club will be visiting Brother's Distillery in Buellton on the last day of August. Tasting of their offerings will be available for the discounted charge of $8.00 per person. The tasting fee will be waived if you buy a bottle.
ANNUAL DUES NOW DUE
If you have not paid your dues yet, please bring a check to the meeting or mail it in (PO Box 903, Los Olivos CA 93441). Annual dues are $150. You may pay it all now or half now and half in January.
LAST Club Runner Bulletin?
Do you read this bulletin on your phone? If you do, and would like to continue to do so, let me know. Last work I was putting the finishing touches on the the bulletin when I clicked on the Events column to the right. The screen instantly changed to a form that allowed me to edit the Event entries. When I came back to the bulletin, it had reverted to the previous bulletin which I had used as a template. An hour's work wasted.
I would like to change the format to something I can control which will probably be something written in Word and saved as a pdf. Doing so will make it harder to read on a phone, but it might be better than not having a bulletin at all.
Meeting task Schedule
The last Olive Branch described how to use the Rotary Jobs app to see when you will be assigned to bring snacks, give the invocation or be the greeter or techie.
If you would like to put an icon on your phone to access the app any time, use your browser to navigate to the link below (or click the More mtg tasks link at the bottom of the Meeting Tasks column) then save it to your home screen. With an iPhone, tap the icon at the bottom of the screen that looks like a box with an arrow pointing up from it. Then tap Add to Home Screen. With Chrome on Android, tap the menu button, then tap Add to Home Screen.
The Rotary Jobs app is at:
http://www.ezmeter.us/cgi-bin/lorotary/rotaryjobs.cgi?code=losolivosrotary
Enter that as one line. The part after the question mark lets you enter the site without having to log in with email address and password.
