SYV YOUTH COALITION

The program last week was presented by the SANTA YNEZ VALLEY YOUTH COALITION.   Mary Conway, Director and Jennifer Cabrera, Data & Evaluation Specialist were the speakers.  Jennifer presented a power point slide show comparing results from the 2016-2017 California Healthy Kids Survey given to 9th and 11th grade students at Santa Ynez Valley High School with other high schools in Santa Barbara County.   Our valued Rotary Club member Randall Day is the current chairperson of the Coalition.
The questions answered by students related to Alcohol use, Marijuana use, and cigarette use; Truancy, drug distribution; Harassment/ Bullying; and Mental Health issues of Depression and Suicide.  The survey evaluated the answers to questions from our local high school against a combined list of answers from all other high schools in the county.
The chart of “Harassment/Bullying”, both physical and/or verbal, were recorded as DOUBLE the percentages for our local students against the percentages reported from all other high schools.   One chart showing physical bullying for 11th grade boys & girls indicated 12% of OUR local students reported the problem vrs.  the chart of all other schools showing only 6% of students.
We questioned both speakers about the reasons for this large difference and they reported the SYV Youth Coalition is evaluating this very important survey result.   On a positive note,  most of the other charts show a gradual downward use of alcohol and cigarettes over the past nine years.  Marijuana and inhalants use show a slight improvement with prescription and pain medicines use show little change.   Continued community involvement with the Coalition is vital to the health and well-being of our children.

NOT AT THE GRANGE THIS WEEK

We have a field trip to the Buellton Senior Center to see the new storage area for the thrift shop.

Foundation Board Meeting

Our club's foundation board met Monday evening and approved grants from all our avenues of service.  All this years funding has now been allocated to different charities locally and around the world.

J & O Committee Meeting

The planning committee headed by Jim Lohnas met Tuesday night.  Everything is on schedule. We need all the members to be available for the event on June 3.  In the meantime, you can help by:
  • Selling tickets
  • Acquiring silent auction items
  • Finding sponsors (advertising for the program plus event tickets, $250 - $1000)
  • Asking a friend to help out at the event

PHOTO ALBUM NOW ON WEBSITE

A growing photo album of this year's events is now on our website.  It is private so you have to log in before you see the link to it. That means that even if ClubRunner welcomes you by name at the top of the home page, you still have to log in with user name and password. This will take you to the admin area which you need to leave and return to the home page. Near the bottom of the left hand column in the box labelled Other Pages, you will find the Photo Album link. Perhaps we should make the photos public and forget this log in process.
